On 17 Apr. 1882, twenty-six leading Seattle citizens and businessmen organized the Seattle Chamber of Commerce with the intent of protecting local interests. The Alaska Engineering Commission (AEC) was created by President Woodrow Wilson as part of the Alaska Railroad Act (38 Stat. 305), March 12, 1914, to supervise construction of Alaska's railways. The AEC went under the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1915.
